How To Stay Woke on your Weekends

Here are some movie to help you stay woke! Happy binging!

Movies:

1. Selma

If you haven't seen this movie yet, what are you honestly doing with your life. This movie, about the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, led by MLK. Not only is the plot woke, but the cast is amazing, with household names like Oprah and Common starring in the film. Also the soundtrack is great, with my personal favorite being Glory by John Legend and Common. It is both uplifiting and educational, and definitely made me very emotional (although it's pretty easy to make me cry) Please watch this, you won't regret it.

2. Beloved

For those who want a movie that's more dark and terror-oriented, Beloved is the movie for you. Starring Oprah and Danny Glover, this film follows the post-slavery life of a black mother who's haunted by the actions of her past. This movie does a great job of displaying the dark, psychological effects of slavery that follows those even after they escape. ( Be warned it is rated R)

3. Lean on Me

Lean on Me is not only on this list because it is an amazing, uplifting movie starring Morgan Freeman, but also because it is based on the true story of a school in New Jersey. It's about a principal in one of the worst schools in the state who works to overcome obstacles such as gang violence to try and turn the school around. Even though it's an old movie (1989) its definitely worth the watch.

4. Keep the Lights On

This indie film touches on the issues of mental health, LGBTQ+ community, and the struggles of addiction. It's a very raw and emotional film that dives deep into issues that people struggle to talk about. This poignant love story is definitely not just about the romance but all the baggage that comes with it. (Rated R)

5. Remember the Titans

This last one is my personal favorite. It's a cinematic masterpiece featuring Denzel Washington and Ryan Gosling. It is about a black coach coming to a small Southern town and integrating the football team. The team and the town must work together to overcome racism and succeed in football and life. It is a great movie that mixes racism and athletics together to create both a thought-provoking and exciting movie.
