One Size Does Not Fit All

90% of teens are unhappy with their body shape and the clothing industry is a huge one of the many sources for this huge problem. From models getting unrealistically photoshopped to having clothing that only fits a select few, the clothing industry lacks an acceptance of people who have different body shapes. With that lack of representation from models that do not have the usual size 0 and five feet and eight inch bodies, there comes a certain level of body shaming against people who do not fit that narrow box of criteria. However, clothing brands that only supply clothing in one size claiming that “one size fits all” when really one size fits some does not promote body positivity in any means.

The popular clothing brand, Brandy Melville, is one of many companies that sell their clothes to young women in only one size claiming that “one size fits all”. While this may uncomplicate work for the producers, it hurts their clients. Because of their exclusive clothing line in terms of sizing, Brandy Melville is dictating to girls that fitting into their clothing is the goal. If clothing stores falsely claim that their clothes fit all girls it will lead to disappointment and insecurity for girls that do not fit the average body size. Even though clothing stores that supply clothing with only one size do not purposefully attack people who do not have the “average body shape”, it is subconsciously feeding insecurities to whomever cannot fit into their clothing.

Despite the clothing brands with a negative influence in regards to body positivity, there are still many clothing brands that promote body positivity. One example for this is Aerie. They have realized that majority of their consumers are teenage girls and have made strides to show that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes with their size inclusive models and have stopped retouching their models. Modcloth is another good example of a body positive clothing brand. Modcloth includes models of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Their clothing even ranges from XS-4X! In addition they do not try to enhance or change any physical part of the model’s bodies. It is important to recognize and publicize clothing brands that promote body positivity and are a good influence to young people who could be insecure with their bodies. Bodies come in all shapes and sizes and clothing brands need to learn that one size most likely won’t fit all.
